Key Differences:
Merchant of Record:
Express – The platform (VanillaPOS) is the merchant of record. Funds are routed to connected accounts, but the platform has broader control over payouts and compliance obligations.
Standard – The connected account (merchant) is the merchant of record. They have a direct relationship with Stripe and handle their own compliance.
Stripe Account Ownership:
Express – The Stripe account is created and owned under the platform’s Connect environment. Merchants get a limited dashboard.
Standard – The merchant owns their full Stripe account directly. They have a complete Stripe dashboard and login.
Platform Visibility & Control:
Express – The platform can view and manage most account and transaction details directly via the Stripe API.
Standard – The platform has limited API visibility into the merchant’s account and cannot manage all aspects of it.
VanillaPOS will configure the account type at onboarding based on the merchant’s operational needs.
