Discounts can be configured with availability dates, minimum purchase requirements, maximum discount amounts, product restrictions, and other rules that determine when and how they can be applied.
Accessing the Discounts page
To access your discounts:
Log in to the Vanilla application.
Select Discounts from the navigation menu on the left side of the screen.
At the top of the Discounts page, you’ll see three summary metrics:
Total Discounts - The total number of discounts associated with the account.
Active Discounts - The number of currently active discounts.
Inactive Discounts - The number of currently inactive discounts.
Below the summary, the discounts table displays the discounts available to your account.
Account and organization discounts
Depending on your Vanilla configuration, the Discounts page may contain both:
Discounts created directly for your account.
Discounts created at the organization level and made available to accounts belonging to that organization.
Organization-level discounts may have restrictions placed on them by an organization administrator.
If an organization administrator has locked a discount or specific settings within it, you’ll see lock indicators when managing the discount. Locked fields appear grayed out and cannot be changed at the account level.
A Discount Locked message and corresponding iconography may also appear at the bottom of the discount window.
Creating a discount
To create a new discount:
Navigate to Discounts.
Select Create Discount in the upper-right corner.
Configure the discount using the available settings.
Save the discount when you’re finished.
The options available when creating a discount are explained below:
Discount Code
Enter the Discount Code that will be used to apply the discount.
This is the code a user enters when applying the discount to eligible products, services, or subscriptions.
Combinable
Use the Combinable setting to determine whether the discount can be used alongside other discounts.
Selected: The discount can be combined with other discounts that are also combinable.
Deselected: The discount must be used by itself and cannot be combined with another discount.
Period Available
The Period Available settings determine when the discount can be used.
You can configure a:
Start Date
End Date
If no availability period is specified, the discount does not have a defined start or end date.
You can also specify a start date and select No Expiration when you want a discount to become available on a particular date and remain available indefinitely.
Minimum Amount
Use Minimum Amount to require a minimum transaction value before the discount can be applied.
For example, if a discount should only be available for transactions of $100 or more, set the minimum amount to $100.
Select No Minimum Amount if the discount should be available regardless of the transaction value.
Minimum Quantity
Use Minimum Quantity to specify the minimum number of eligible products or services that must be purchased before the discount can be used.
For example, setting a minimum quantity of 3 requires the applicable quantity to reach at least three before the discount is eligible.
Maximum Discount Amount
The Maximum Discount Amount limits the total value that can be deducted by the discount.
For example, consider a 50% off discount with a maximum discount amount of $50:
On a $100 eligible purchase, the discount is $50.
On a $1,000 eligible purchase, 50% would normally equal $500, but the discount is capped at $50.
If No Maximum Amount is selected, the discount is not capped. In the $1,000 example above, the full $500 discount could therefore be applied.
Choosing the discount scope
The Discount Scope determines what the discount can be applied to.
You can choose between Global and Product Specific:
Global discounts
Select Global when the discount should be available across applicable products, services, and subscriptions rather than being restricted to specific items.
Product-specific discounts
Select Product Specific when the discount should only apply to designated items.
Additional configuration options become available when Product Specific is selected.
You can first choose whether the discount applies to Products or Subscriptions.
Products
When Products is selected, use Application Type to determine how your selected products are treated.
You can configure the discount to:
Include specific products, making the discount applicable to those products.
Exclude specific products, preventing the discount from applying to those products.
Use the Products field to select the products that should be included or excluded.
Subscriptions
Selecting Subscriptions provides similar options for defining the applicable products, including whether selected products should be included or excluded.
Subscription discounts also include a Duration setting.
You can configure a subscription discount to apply:
Forever - The discount continues for the duration of the subscription.
Once - The discount is applied a single time.
Repeating - The discount applies for a specified number of months.
When Repeating is selected, enter the number of months for which the discount should apply.
Important: Subscription-based discounts cannot be edited after they have been created. Review all settings carefully before saving a subscription discount.
Store Availability
Discounts can be limited to specific store locations using Store Scope.
Choose:
Global for all stores.
Include for selected stores only.
Exclude for all stores except those selected.
Choosing the discount type
Use Discount Type to determine how the value of the discount is calculated.
A discount can be configured as either:
Percentage - Reduces the eligible amount by a percentage, such as 10% off.
Dollar Amount - Deducts a fixed monetary amount, such as $25 off.
Configure the corresponding discount value based on the type you select.
Editing an existing discount
Existing discounts can be managed directly from the Discounts page.
To edit a discount:
Navigate to Discounts.
Locate the discount in the discounts table.
Select the Manage icon for that discount.
Update the available settings in the discount window.
Save your changes.
Some settings may appear grayed out and unavailable for editing. This generally indicates that the field has been locked at the organization level.
Look for the lock indicators and Discount Locked message for additional confirmation that restrictions have been applied by an organization administrator.
Note: Subscription-based discounts cannot be edited after creation.
